Saudi Arabia stunned two-time World Cup winners Argentina in a thrilling Group C opener in Lusail, pulling off one of the World Cup’s biggest upsets.
Saudi Arabia, ranked 51st in the world, could have been done and dusted in the first half as Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.
Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, turned the game on its head in a stunning 10-minute period after halftime, with Saleh Al-Shehri leveling with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead to spark pandemonium in the stands.
After displaying ruthlessness on one end, the Green Falcons showed toughness on the other, holding off a stellar Argentina front line to secure only their fourth World Cup victory and throw the group wide open.
Argentina, led by Lionel Scaloni, entered the tournament as one of the favorites, riding a 36-game unbeaten streak that included a Copa America title in 2021.

They now have to do everything they can to keep their hopes of a first global triumph since 1986 alive and to give Messi a fitting end to what will almost certainly be his World Cup swansong.
On Saturday, they will face Mexico, while Saudi Arabia will face Poland.
