Woman killed as mining pit dug under her house collapses

In Odumasi, Ashanti Region, a mining pit dug beneath a house has sunk a private toilet.

A young woman who was using the facility at the time of the collapse was killed in the incident.

The pit was dug by illegal miners in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, and it is one of many such hidden holes dug beneath houses in the area.

According to sources, several houses are in danger of collapsing as a result of these hidden pits.

The body of the unidentified woman has since been recovered using an excavator.

Meanwhile, residents in the Eastern Region town of Apinamang are being intimidated and frustrated as illegal miners force them out of their homes.

Illegal mining, colloquially known as ‘galamsey,’ is wreaking havoc and endangering residents’ livelihoods.

In the case of Joyce Wowornyo, ‘galamseyers’ have dug around her house in search of gold in order to take over her land.
She lives deep in the Apinamang forest and has seen firsthand the devastation caused by illegal mining.
She and other residents have had to fight illegal miners in order to protect what remains of their lands.
