The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is questioning the effectiveness of District and Municipal Security Councils in combating illegal mining (galamsey).
According to the Asantehene, despite the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, little progress has been made.
The Asantehene stated that the fight against galamsey has been inadequate during a meeting with the new US Ambassador to Ghana at the Manhyia Palace.

“We have the political administration, the District Chief Executive, and the Security Council at the district level.” Are they all claiming that they are unaware of the galamseyers’ activities? It’s as simple as that: if they can’t detect and stop the operation of these galamseyers, they aren’t fit to be there.”
“We should have resolved this issue by now.” Even though the President has put his presidency on the line, this is still going on. Something is wrong somewhere, in my opinion.”
