Following the cancellation of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Black Stars technical advisor Chris Hughton praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for organizing friendly matches for the team.
Ghana will play five-time World Cup winners Brazil and Nicaragua in four days as part of their preparations for the 2022 World Cup.
The Black Stars were scheduled to play Angola in a 2023 AFCON qualifying double-header, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed the games in July to give the continent’s five World Cup-bound teams more time to prepare for the tournament in Qatar.
CAF’s decision prompted the GFA to organise friendlies for the team, and they landed Brazil, one of the World Cup favourites, and Nicaragua.
In an interview with TV3, the former Premier League manager praised the GFA for securing very good matches, claiming that the Black Stars will try to win to boost confidence ahead of the World Cup, but the focus will be on the players’ performances.
“We thought there would be two AFCON games, so the organization had to organize two friendly games very quickly, and we congratulate them on that.” Hughton said on TV3, “[We have] two very good friends.”
“There is a lot of planning that goes into that.” Otto’s job will be to figure out what he wants out of these two games. Because results matter, the balances will be results.”

It’s beneficial to enter the World Cup campaign with a winning record, but now that the World Cup is so close, it’s more important to focus on the outcome and individual players’ performances.
The time and experience provided by these two games will allow Otto, myself, and the technical team to evaluate each player and create the World Cup squad.
On Tuesday, the team for the games was revealed, and it features Mohammed Salisu, Tariq Lamptey, and Inaki Williams.
Prior to playing Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco in Lorca, Spain, Ghana will play Brazil on Friday, September 23, at Stade Oceane in Le Harve, France.
