In an emotionally charged night at the 2025 BET Awards, filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry delivered a bold critique of efforts to erase Black history in America—taking aim at both political powers and the entertainment industry. His remarks, delivered from the stage of the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, were met with thunderous applause and widespread acclaim across social media.
Referencing a walk along the beach with his son, Perry spoke metaphorically about the lasting impact of African American contributions to history.
“They are removing our books from libraries, they are removing our stories and our history… It’s as if someone wants to erase our footprints,” Perry said, referencing actions by the Trump administration. “But the truth of the matter is, it’s impossible to erase our footprints—because we left them on water.”
The powerful metaphor highlighted the enduring legacy of Black Americans, from the Middle Passage to modern-day struggles for equality and representation. Perry’s message struck a nerve in a cultural climate where educational censorship and racial tensions remain at the forefront of national discourse.
Perry didn’t stop at politics. He also turned a critical eye toward Hollywood, asserting his studio has done more to empower Black creators financially than traditional institutions.
“I have made more Black billionaires—hear me when I say this—than any studio in this city combined,” he declared. “Because I’m making footprints.”
Perry, known for building a film empire outside of Hollywood’s traditional structures, encouraged aspiring creatives to keep forging ahead: “If you have a dream, keep making footprints. Don’t let anybody stop you. You can do it.”
Another emotional high point came from Jamie Foxx, who accepted one of the night’s Ultimate Icon Awards with visible emotion. Reflecting on his near-death experience after suffering a stroke in 2023, Foxx was moved to tears during his speech.
“When I saw that in memoriam, I was like, ‘Man, that could’ve been me,’” Foxx confessed. “But I don’t know why I went through what I went through—but I know that my second chance, I’m not going to turn it down.”
He credited his family with helping him through his health scare and pledged to live with renewed purpose.
The 2025 BET Awards served not only as a celebration of Black excellence in entertainment, but also a platform for powerful reflections on race, resilience, and the enduring impact of Black culture. From Perry’s critique of historical erasure to Foxx’s emotional return to the spotlight, the evening was marked by both urgency and inspiration.
As the ceremony closed, the message was clear: Black stories, Black voices, and Black dreams will not be silenced.
