Togbe Afede rejects Ken Agyapong’s gifts at the yam festival

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, publicly rejected gifts presented to the chiefs and people of Asogli State in the Volta Region during the ongoing Teza (Yam Festival).

The humiliating development occurred on Friday, September 9, 2022, when Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, sat in state to receive homage from all Asogli State chiefs.

According to Graphic Online, Kennedy Agyapong was present in Ho to pay homage to the traditional leader, but his gifts were turned down, and he was told that his presence and gifts were uninvited.

The state-owned news outlet stated that, right on the durbar ground, some sub-chiefs acting as intermediaries to receive the gifts on behalf of Togbe Afede rejected them and asked the NPP flagbearer candidate, lawmaker, and businessman to take them away.

Because of some disparaging remarks about Togbe Afede, the Asogli State chose to reject Agyapong’s gifts.

The palace spokesperson told Graphic Online that the rejection of the gifts was due to “his gross lack of respect” for the Agbogbomefia.

“A few years ago, Kennedy referred to our Agbogbomefia as a corrupt person who used his position as chairman of the National Investment Bank board to do fishy deals,” the spokesperson said. “We have also not forgotten Kennedy Agyapong’s comment about the Ewe and Ga people a few years ago.”

The spokesperson denied reports that Agyapong was ejected from the festival, which was held at the Asogli Palace in Ho-Bankoe.

“He left without anyone running after him soon after we told him that his presence and homage were unsolicited.”

The gifts, including cartons of bottled water, are seen being packed back into the car that transported them to the durbar ground in videos and photos shared by the news outlet.

Kennedy Agyapong, who was sitting near Volta Regional NPP Chairman Kafui Woanya, is seen leaving with his entourage after waving goodbye to a few people on the durbar ground.

The one-month festival emphasises unity, reconciliation, stocktaking, and development, and it also serves as a platform for the annual reunion with the ancestors and the re-affirmation of allegiance to the Agbogbome Stool by all chiefs and their subjects in the Asogli State.

The Asogli State chiefs’ and people’s yam festival concludes this weekend under the distinguished patronage of Togbe Afede XIV.

The festival began on August 6, 2022, and is scheduled to end on September 11, 2022.
