Chiefs and residents of Kwahu Daa in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region have protested against alleged community mining proposed by Kwahu West Member of Parliament Joseph Frempong.
The protest is in response to the MP allegedly informing the chiefs of his intentions in a letter.
The chiefs and residents of Kwahu Daa have warned the MP not to go ahead with any plans for community mining at Kwahu Daa.
Nana Amakye Appah, Chief of Kwahu Daa, expressed concern that the community mining scheme would interfere with their farming activities.
“The letter was brought by the MP, Hon. Joseph Fremong. We oppose all forms of community mining. This season, we sold several bags of cocoa; we cannot let our cocoa, plantain, and cocoyam farms go to waste. We enjoy farming and the income it provides.”
The residents are outraged, claiming that the negative impact of community mining on their social and cultural lives outweighed the economic gains.

“The negative impact of mining does not encourage us to give up our farmlands.” We want to raise our children in a better environment.”
“I am deeply hurt by the MP’s action,” said another. We do not want the community to be mined.”
The Akufo-Addo government, through the Minerals Commission, which regulates the mining sector, introduced a Community Mining Scheme in 2019. (CMS).
This was intended to convert illegal miners into formal small-scale miners by allowing them to mine in specifically designated areas under government supervision if certain safety and environmental criteria were met.
