Substandard contraceptives and aphrodisiacs seized

Substandard contraceptives and aphrodisiacs seized

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized GHS 10 million worth of bynillin nicotine, cartons of Postinor-2; an oral contraceptive for women, cosmetics, medical devices, Chinese herbal medicines, and aphrodisiac.

The 2,600 bottles of bynillin nicotine and 100 cartons of postinor 2 will be destroyed at the Adepa Landfill site in Nsawam, along with substandard medications and items.

Mr Vigil Edward Prah-Eshun, FDA’s Head of Intelligence, stated that the medicines were seized because they had not been registered with the Authority.

“The seized postinor 2 arrived in separate consignments, with the packaging material separated from the packaging itself, indicating that the person was determined to manufacture the products here in Ghana,” he explained.

Mr Prah-Eshun stated that the FDA would continue to send officers to markets on a daily basis to monitor activities in order to ensure that products sold to consumers were safe.

“By this seizure, we want the public to know that we are interested in protecting public health and that we are still working and not sleeping on the job, and we thank the public for alerting us on some of these issues,” he said.

The Head of Intelligence stated that some of the drugs were seized at Okaishie and that the Authority had begun court proceedings against about ten people.

Following the seizure of the medicines, he said, some had received administrative fines based on the gravity of the offense.

Mr Prah- Eshun urged the public to check the expiry dates and authenticity of products before purchasing.
