Leeds maintained their unblemished start to the season with a stunning triumph over Chelsea’s new-look squad, putting on a performance that will give Thomas Tuchel nightmares.
Chelsea, who spent more than £170 million on players this summer, were the architects of their own demise in the first half. Edouard Mendy gave Leeds the lead after he mishandled a backpass, enabling Brendan Aaronsen to pounce.
Four minutes later, Raheem Sterling conceded a free kick on the edge of the box, and following Jack Harrison’s pass, Rodrigo scored his fourth goal of the year.

But Leeds also outfought their opponents, particularly in the middle of the field, in a nod to the two teams’ legendary clashes.
And it was their first Premier League victory over Chelsea since 2000 when Harrison scored after Daniel James’ cross was touched to him by Rodrigo.
At that moment, an already noisy Elland Road was in astonishment; home supporters ridiculed their Chelsea opponents, and manager Jesse Marsch jumped in excitement.
Chelsea had opportunities. In the opening minute, Sterling curled wide and had a goal overturned. Marc Cucurella, who cost £62 million to acquire, also missed twice.
However, Kalidou Koulibaly’s dismissal for a second booking six minutes from the end of the game summed up Chelsea’s afternoon and allowed Leeds supporters to bask in the joy of a fantastic start to the year as their club climbed into third place in the standings.
