South Korea: A high percentage of those who died were women

We continue to hear reports of distraught relatives visiting hospitals and a missing persons’ center in Seoul in an attempt to locate missing family members.

Police say they have identified nearly all of those killed or injured in Itaewon on Saturday.

They are also warning that the death toll is expected to rise, as 37 people were seriously injured.

So far, we know that the overwhelming crowds that filled Itaewon’s narrow streets disproportionately affected women – 97 of the 154 confirmed dead were female.

Officials believe this is because women with smaller frames were unable to fight their way out of the crowd, but this is only a theory at this point.

Crowds are seen in the popular nightlife district of Itaewon in Seoul on October 30, 2022.

Several female crush survivors have spoken about their panic when they couldn’t move or breathe, with some claiming they were trapped for up to an hour before breaking free.
