Soldier’s stray bullet allegedly kills nursing mother

A nursing mother and her baby were hit by a stray bullet from gunfire by a soldier at a funeral, killing her at Manso Datano in the Ashanti Region’s Amansie South District.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning, according to myjoyonline.com, when the said military officer allegedly discharged live ammunition on mourners.

According to the news website, the deceased, Felicia Danquah, 30, and her child were hit by a stray bullet when one of four soldiers attacked residents who were observing the interment of a colleague.

Kwame Amponsah, the assembly member for the area, recounted how the fatal shooting occurred, saying that the unidentified soldier ran after the mourners and physically assaulted an onlooker before firing shots into the air to disperse the residents.

One of the bullets hit the ground, deflected, and hit the nursing mother in the stomach, while her baby, who was strapped to her back, received a gunshot wound in the palm.

The incident has enraged residents, who are now calling for the military deployment to be withdrawn.

Officers from the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters visited the bereaved family and assured them that an investigation would be launched and the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

The cause of the shooting is unknown, but the community has returned to a state of unease.
