Asamoah Gyan described Portugal’s penalty in their 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday as “soft.”
Although replays showed that Mohammed Salisu got a touch on the ball, Cristiano Ronaldo was ruled to have been brought down in the box by him.
Ronaldo scored the penalty that put Portugal ahead, but an exciting final 17 minutes saw the Portuguese win with the odd goal in five.
Gyan told SuperSport after the game that he thought the penalty was “soft,” and that he couldn’t “understand why the referee didn’t go and check the screen.”
Ghana’s all-time leading scorer isn’t the only one who was taken aback by the referee’s decision.
Darrent Bent, a former Sunderland and England forward, was convinced that the official made the wrong decision.
Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer, was also adamant that the penalty should not have been given.

The win moves Portugal to the top of the group, but with South Korea and Uruguay drawing 0-0 earlier in the day, the Black Stars’ loss today may not be too costly.
