Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service, has directed that all Regional Hospitals establish Staff Clinics dedicated to the care of all health personnel.
Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye stated at the start of the 29th Annual General Conference of District Directors of Health Service in Takoradi that the establishment of Staff Clinics will ensure that health staff recover in time to return to work.
“I’m looking for a DDHS Group that cares about the caregivers.” The question now is, who looks after the caregivers? Who looks after a midwife or a nurse who becomes ill at the CHPS Compound? That is why we have directed that all Regional Hospitals establish staff clinics for all levels of staff. Just make sure you’re insured, have your ID card, and that you can get care there, which is critical,” he said.

While assuring the District Directors of the Ghana Health Service of the Ghana Health Service’s efforts to improve their accommodation and transportation, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye urged them not to abdicate their responsibilities to supervise the operations of private health facilities in the country.
“You must be in charge of oversight.” Your name is not District Director of Ghana Health Service, but you are District Director of Health Service, which means you have oversight over everyone or every health activity in your district, whether it is quasi-government, private, or Ghana Health Service, and that role must not be reneged on… Let us not forget that we have oversight of healthcare under the law and must therefore play that role properly,” he added.
A World Health Organization (WHO) representative, Dr Francis Chisaka Kosolo, who stated that the WHO is working with governments to strengthen health systems through investment in primary healthcare, urged the District Director of Health Services not to forget the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the lack of resilience health care systems in most countries disproportionately affected people living with Non-Communicable Diseases, NCDs.
Dr Emmanuel Akwoulo Agyigewe Teviu, National Chairman of Directors of Health Services Group, commended the government for some improvements in accommodation and vehicles for Health Directors but called for more as the challenge with accommodation and vehicles remains.
Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, Western Regional Director of Health Services, commended the District Directors of Health Service and challenged them to continue as the Service looks for ways to improve their logistical needs.
The theme of the ongoing two-day 29th National Annual District Directors of Health Service Group Conference in Takoradi is Strengthening NCD Services within Primary Healthcare Towards Resilient Pandemic Preparedness and Response; The Role of The DDHS.
