President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, announcing a comprehensive independent audit of the controversial National Cathedral project initiated under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
In a national address delivered on Wednesday, 7 May, marking his first 120 days in office, President Mahama revealed that global auditing firm Deloitte & Touche has been commissioned to conduct a thorough review of the project’s finances and procurement processes.
“The war against corruption continues unabated,” President Mahama declared. “Deloitte & Touche is conducting an independent audit of the National Cathedral project. I expect their report by the end of this month [May].”
The announcement signals a major step forward in the administration’s efforts to bring transparency and accountability to high-profile government projects. The National Cathedral, which has been mired in controversy over its ballooning costs, lack of financial transparency, and suspected procurement breaches, remains a focal point of public scrutiny.
President Mahama also disclosed that investigations are underway into other major state-sponsored initiatives, including the organisation of the 13th African Games hosted in Accra earlier this year.
“A number of officials have been invited and questioned concerning the 13th African Games,” he confirmed, signalling that no project or individual is beyond the reach of the law.
These actions, the President noted, are part of a broader framework of governance reforms and anti-corruption measures promised during his election campaign and actively pursued since taking office in January 2025.
