π Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee probing petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, citing alleged conflict of interest and ethical breaches.
βοΈ Alleged Improper Meeting Raises Integrity Concerns
In the petition, Mr. Kumiβalso known as Adenta Kumiβalleges that Justices Gabriel Pwamang, Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonni Kulendi were seen on the night of May 15, 2025, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra, dining with Thaddeus Sory, the legal representative of one of the petitioners in the case.
π£ βThe meeting… has destroyed the integrity of the process and reduces public confidence in the process so far,β the petition states.
Kumi claims the individuals were overheard discussing case-related matters, just hours after the committee held its first sittingβa development he describes as deeply unethical and compromising.
β οΈ Claims of Prior Bias and Judicial Ambitions
Kumi further asserts that:
- Justice Pwamang has previously ruled in favor of the same petitioner now represented by Mr. Sory.
- All three justicesβPwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Kulendiβhave allegedly shown interest in becoming Chief Justice themselves, raising questions about their neutrality in a case concerning the sitting CJ.
He characterizes the conduct as βdeplorableβ and says that without intervention, the inquiry risks becoming a βsham process.β
π Call for Immediate Action
The petition urges President Mahama to:
- Dissolve the current five-member committee;
- Reconstitute a new body with members free of bias or conflicting interests;
- Restore public confidence in the integrity of the inquiry into the Chief Justice.
