The opposition Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is urging Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to abolish the guarantor system for the Ghana Card in favour of new voter registration.
According to the party, if the EC’s proposal is implemented, it will result in the disenfranchisement of many Ghanaians.
The PPP argued against using the national identity card as the sole source document for continuous voter registration in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 14.
“We must keep in mind that the system allowing for an effective, efficient, and robust national database is not complete and non-existent as we speak,” said Kofi Mantey, Director of Communications.

“Furthermore, not every Ghanaian has obtained a National Identification Card from the institution tasked with doing so.”
It concluded that excluding guarantors and accepting only the Ghana Card for registration will disenfranchise a segment of Ghanaians in the upcoming district level and unit committee elections in 2023, as well as the general elections in 2024.
“As a result, we urge the EC to reconsider its decision to abolish the guarantor system and include it, along with any other means of identification, in the new CI so that every Ghanaian can be registered for the elections without difficulty.”
