Police on manhunt for accomplice of shot armed robber

Following, intelligence that an armed robbery gang was planning an attack on the cluster of banks in the Suame Magazine and Maakro enclave in Kumasi on Friday, October 21, 2022, the Police launched a special anti-robbery operation in which one of the armed robbers was shot.

The armed robber and his accomplice on motorcycles attacked a customer carrying a brown envelope who had exited the Fidelity Bank, Maakro branch.

In the midst of gunfire, the robbers attacked the bank customer and snatched the envelope.

During the shooting, a Daewoo Matiz saloon car parked on the bank grounds had its rear windscreen and left door glass shattered.

The police, who had set up surveillance in the area, responded by firing at the armed robbers, hitting the pillion rider who fell off the motorcycle. The rider, who also received gunshot wounds, managed to flee.

During the exchange of fire, one of the police officers was shot by the armed robbers and sustained a gunshot wound to his right hip.

The injured officer and the suspect were both taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment. However, the suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The deceased suspect’s body was taken to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

Efforts are being made to apprehend his accomplice and bring him to justice.

“We would like to appeal to the general public, particularly those who run health facilities in Kumasi and its environs, to report any person seeking medical attention with a gunshot wound for prompt Police action.”

“We would like to commend all of the officers who participated in the operation and wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery,” said a Police statement on Saturday, October 22.
