NPA & Togo’s Environmental Directorate to combat fuel smuggling

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has begun a collaboration with the Togolese Directorate in Charge of Environment to monitor the cross-border movement of waste oil.

According to the two institutions, some unscrupulous individuals smuggle in finished petroleum products under the guise of transporting waste oil, highlighting the need for the two countries to collaborate in sharing information in order to reduce illegalities.

This follows a courtesy call by the NPA, led by its Deputy Chief Executive, Mrs Linda Asante, on the Togolese Directorate in charge of Environment, headed by Miss Mery Yaou, last week in Lome, Togo.

Mrs Asante stated that, while she was aware of the Basel Convention, which provides a framework for such activities, she was not aware of any waste oil activities.

Mrs Asante stated that, while she was aware of the Basel Convention, which provides a framework for such activities, waste oil activities have become a major concern in Ghana, which is “the reason why the NPA seeks to have a working relationship with the Directorate in Togo.”

Miss Mery Yaou, the Directorate’s Head, agreed, saying the visit was very timely, especially given their recent concerns about waste oil activities, particularly how waste oil delivered to Ghana is disposed of.

She assured the NPA of her institution’s support and close collaboration in putting in place a robust system for effectively monitoring waste oil activities.

The NPA team also paid a visit to its counterpart in Togo, the Comité de Suivi des Fluctuations des Prix des Produits Pétroliers (CSFPPP), as well as the Togolese Port Authority, which is in charge of all port infrastructure, including the Oil Jetty.

Mrs Asante expressed the NPA’s desire to discuss additional business opportunities that can be capitalized on by players in both countries.

The discussion also focused on developing strategies to improve export trade efficiency while instituting measures to combat illegal trade practices.

In a related development, the NPA team paid a visit to the Sanol Gas (an LPG marketing company in Togo) project site, where a 3000MT capacity LPG Tank Farm is currently being built.

The purpose of the visit was to look into potential business opportunities between the two countries in the LPG sub-sector.

Mrs. Asante informed Sanol Gas of a review of existing guidelines aimed at making the export process more business-friendly and facilitating trade.

She also urged Sanol Gas to reconsider Ghana as a potential LPG supply country.
