Norway drops midfielder for playing in Russia

Mathias Normann of Norway will not be considered for international duty because he recently joined an unnamed Russian club, the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) announced on Monday.

Stale Solbakken, Norway’s coach, informed Normann on Monday that he would not be invited to the team’s next meeting.

While the majority of foreign players fled Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February, Normann, a 26-year-old midfielder, is returning to Russia after a season on loan at Norwich City.

Normann previously played for Russian club FC Rostov before joining Norway.

“All of the Norwegian and European football agree to put joint pressure on Russia as a belligerent party that has also very actively used positions of power in sport,” NFF President Lise Klaveness said in a statement.
