Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture, has stated that it is incorrect to claim that there is a food shortage in Ghana.
He stated on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on TV3 on Thursday, August 11, that there is no food shortage in Ghana as a result of the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PF&J) initiative.
“People incorrectly say there is a food shortage in Ghana,” said the former Kwadaso Member of Parliament. When you look at all of the sectors, the agricultural sector stands out as the one that is doing well.”
He predicted that the sector would grow by 4.9 percent in 2019 and 8.1 percent in 2021.
“Planting for Food and Jobs is a big success,” he said.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto went on to say that the Akufo-Addo administration popularized fertilizer use in Ghana.
He stated that when the government took over in 2017, fertilizer application was 8 kilograms per hectare, but it is now 25 kilograms per hectare.
“We have significantly increased fertilizer supply, and we have popularized fertilizer,” he said.
