Nigeria’s advertising regulator is suing Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as its local affiliate, for 30 billion nairas (approximately $70 million; £60 million).
It claims that Meta and its Lagos-based agent, AT3 Resources Limited, should pay up because they failed to have advertisements on social media platforms vetted by the government before publication.
Meta and AT3 Resources Limited have yet to respond to the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria’s lawsuit (Arcon).
Nigeria previously banned the microblogging service Twitter for seven months until it agreed to a number of conditions.
