Enrollment in Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will soon be digitised, allowing people to register online in a convenient and secure manner.
When this positive innovation is implemented, it will reduce traffic at NHIS district offices, which are frequently visited for the same reason.
Dr. Ernest K.P Kwarko, Chair of the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) Governing Board, made this known in Accra at a ceremony where the Authority sealed some deals with the four new entrants into the local Premier League.
He urged all non-members to join and benefit from the Scheme’s expanded Benefits Package, which now includes the diagnosis and treatment of four major childhood cancers: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Burkitt Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma, and Wilms Tumor.

Dr Ernest K. P Kwarko, Chairman of the Governing Board, is optimistic that the partnerships will increase the Scheme’s active membership to 80 per cent.
Dr Okoe Boye NHIA, the NHIA Chief Executive, reiterated the formation of a fact-finding committee to address the recurring issue of extra monetary demands by some credentialed health care service providers (copayments).
“The authority has formed a nine-member committee to address the impact of copayments on access to medical services covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).”
“The Committee’s mandate is to ensure that the NHIA remains committed to its policy of providing financial risk protection against the cost of quality basic health care for all Ghanaians.”
“The committee would be replicated across Ghana’s 16 regions to empower the NHIA Regional and District management teams to be responsible for healthcare facility visits, report writing, and escalating copayment issues to the higher authority for prompt action.”
