Nana Addo will keep shielding appointees engaged in galamsey

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has questioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-determination Addo’s to deal ruthlessly with government officials accused of illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey.

The NDC maintains government, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has not demonstrated sufficient commitment in dealing with party bigwigs at the root of the illegality.

While speaking to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Kumasi as part of a meeting to find a long-term solution to the galamsey menace, President Akufo-Addo stated his willingness not to shield any government official found complicit in galamsey activities.

However, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, stated at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 6, 2022, that the President is not backing up his efforts with action.

“President Akufo-comment Addo’s on this matter demonstrates unequivocally that he has not repented of shielding his officials involved in illegal mining and demonstrates what a walking contradiction he is, as he continues to skirt around this very important issue.”

“The Ghanaian people are simply tired of the President’s cocktail of empty and useless rhetoric on this subject of galamsey,” says Sammy Gyamfi. “We’re telling him today that either we start seeing action from him or he should stop talking to us,” he said emphatically.

The NDC also believes the Akufo-Addo administration has failed miserably in its fight against galamsey.

The party describes the government’s measures and strategies for winning the war on illegality as a clear deception, alleging that some members of the NPP and government are behind galamsey in the country.

“The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government’s so-called fight against galamsey is a sham and has been a lost battle since day one.” This is because the President has never demonstrated a genuine commitment or political will to combat the threat.”

“President Akufo-Addo has proven to be a leader who specializes in talking but not doing.” Today, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia, our beloved country is at a crossroads of unprecedented economic chaos and unprecedented environmental degradation,” he said.

Sammy Gyamfi went on to accuse the president and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, of “shifting the blame to the chieftaincy institution” during the press conference.
