NABCO unpaid beneficiaries threaten court action

The Coalition of Nation Builders Corps Trainees (NABCO) has given the government a month to meet its financial obligations to its members.
This follows the official termination of the NABCO program on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

The three-year program, which began in 2018, will be extended in 2021.
According to the beneficiaries, the nonpayment of the allowances began with the extension.

In an interview with Citi News, Coalition Patron Nana Barimah stated that if the ultimatum expires, the Coalition will take legal action against the government.

“Despite the fact that the government did not specify any timelines for which trainees should expect a payment, the government is unwilling to pay NABCO trainees.” We anticipate foul play and nonpayment, so we have given the government a one-month grace period. If September ends without us being paid, we will have no choice but to take the government to court.”

The beneficiaries have already given notice that they will hold another protest on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, in the vicinity of the Jubilee House.

The NABCO Trainees Association stated in a press statement issued on August 29, signed by the National President, Dennis Opoku Katakyie, that the government’s deadline to respond favourably to their petition received on August 18 had expired.

“Following the recent demonstration at Independence Square on the 18th of August 2022, for which a petition detailing the grievances of NABCO trainees was received by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Emmanuel Adumua-Bossman, on behalf of the Vice President, H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a time window, which fell on the 26th of August 2022, was given to the government in the hope of receiving a positive response.

“The ultimatum’s expiration date has been extended by three (3) days.” “As we all know, NABCO trainees are only two days away from their departure date, September 1st, 2022, as announced succinctly by the Finance Minister in his budgetary review reading,” the statement continued.

The Association maintains that if their 10 months of unpaid stipends are not paid to them on the day of phase 2 of their demonstration, they will not leave the Jubilee House premises.
“The undertone of government silence in response to our petition defines, undeniably, a great sense of uncaring attitude, which further deteriorates trainees’ welfare.”

The Association is thus calling on all NABCO trainees from across the country to converge in Greater Accra for the picketing at the Jubilee House, which begins at Obra Spot.
