Entertainment / Europe / Social

August 17, 2022 – Khaby Lame was granted citizenship by city officials in Chivasso, the northern  Italian city where his family settled after leaving Senegal.

Khaby Lame, a TikTok sensation whose sardonic, Tiktok videos have given him the most followers anywhere in the world, has been granted Italian citizenship.

The 22-year-old has 148 million TikTok followers, making him the most followed person on the platform, and he now has another reason to celebrate.

The creator, who was born in Senegal, has been living in Italy since he was a year old and has now been granted Italian citizenship.

The 22-year-old was raised in Chivasso, a town close to Turin. As the country continues to debate whether to amend Italian legislation to provide citizenship to all immigrants’ children born there, the revelation of Khaby’s citizenship has come to light.

Khaby’s swearing-in was before officials in Chivasso, the city close to Turin where he and his family had relocated after leaving Senegal when he was barely a year old, “I pledge to be devoted to the Republic and to follow the Constitution and the rules of the State.” He declared.

Children are currently only eligible to seek Italian citizenship once they turn 18 and if they were born and raised in Italy.

Khaby reflected on his upbringing, saying his life is different now since he’s earned his celebrity status through his Tiktok journey.  ‘I have always lived in the low-budget housing but there, despite having nothing, we were happy, we were glad, we played in the courtyard, even though we had nothing.’

He does not believe much has changed since becoming an Italian citizen, telling Al Jazeera English: ‘I already felt Italian before, I mean, before today.’

Lame — whose full name is Khabane Serigne  — began his TikTok career during the world’s biggest pandemic – The covid-19 lockdown. After losing his job in a factory, he took on a comical reaction to “life hack” videos which made people laugh and earned him millions of dollars. Since then, he has seen a rapid climb to digital success and first place in the world of TikTok creators.

“It’s my face and my expressions which make people laugh,” Lame told The New York Times last year, saying his reactions speak “a global language.”
