More Kumasi businesses are closed down in protest of taxes

More Kumasi Central Business District traders have closed their doors in protest of what they call exorbitant tax policies affecting their businesses.

The protest, now in its second day, is gaining traction as the traders’ leadership has vowed not to reverse their decision until the government intervenes to address their concerns.

The leadership met with Ghana Revenue Authority officials this morning and is currently in a critical meeting with their members.

Shoppers coming from far and wide to buy items in the Central Business District are bearing the brunt of the store closures.

“As we indicated yesterday, our businesses are collapsing,” said Charles Kusi Appiah-Kubi, Executive Secretary of the Adum Business Community.

“They are giving us their full support.” The level of dedication is extremely high. We were not expecting this level of support.”

He believes that the protest is also validated by the traders’ support.

“I believe the message is clear.” Policy is hindering business growth and causing it to fail.”

Traders have also been concerned about the cedi’s strength.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana cedi has depreciated by 37.5% against the US dollar as of the end of September 2022.

The dollar is currently trading at slightly more than GH11 to $1.
