MNOs have started blocking unregistered SIM cards

According to Kwame Gyan, Deputy Director, Consumer and Corporate Affairs Division at the National Communications Authority (NCA), unregistered SIM cards has been blocked by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) since Monday, September 5.

He stated that beginning today, Wednesday, September 7, people who have only completed stage one of the registration process will be added to the list of those whose cards are being blocked.

The current SIM registration exercise is set to end on September 30, 2022.

Those who do not register will face consequences.

The NCA stated that as part of the punitive measures, all outgoing calls will be re-routed to IVR for a message to be played before all calls are processed on a daily basis.

In addition, on a weekly rotation, outgoing calls and Data Services for a sequential batch of numbers will be blocked for 48 hours (2 days).

“For the purpose of implementing this punitive measure, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) shall divide the

Unregistered SIMS into five (5) batches.” These measures shall not include SMS blocking in order to allow defaulting subscribers to initiate registration if they so desire.

On the Ghana Tonight Show on Monday, September 6, Mr Kwame Gyan stated, “The MNOs have begun blocking people for a two-day period as stated in our statement.”
