Residents at Kpong-Lorlornyor in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region had illegal power connections, which were disconnected by a team from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and military personnel.
The ECG found that a number of prepaid customers had bypassed the prepaid lines and connected directly to the main power lines, preventing the prepaid metres from recording the power used.
When they learned about the disconnection exercise, some of the criminals fled their homes before the team arrived.
Those in attendance received letters summoning them to appear at the District ECG office in Somanya for further proceedings.
One woman alleged: “I don’t know our prepaid meter has been disconnected and joined to the main meters until I was informed this morning by the team.”

The team also destroyed the power lines carrying electricity to Okletey Terlabi’s home in Odumase, the Lower Manya Constituency MP.
He may have also improperly reconnected power for a resident of his home from the metre.
At the time of the exercise, the MP wasn’t present.
