A lack of the staple food rice in Liberia has exacerbated tensions, with civil society organizations, students, and even politicians threatening street protests to pressure the government to take action.
Tuesday saw a rise in tensions as large groups of angry and desperate people gathered in front of abandoned rice warehouses.
In an effort to reassure the public, the Ministry of Commerce released a hastily written press release.
Rice retailers were urged not to impose sales restrictions or engage in “profiteering at the expense of ordinary people” because there was still rice in the nation.
