President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo believes that if the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, is not politicized, it can be won.
He believes that the fight against the threat cannot be won unless it is approached with a nationalistic mindset.
The President lamented the failure of all efforts to combat galamsey during a meeting with the National House of Chiefs.
“It is obvious that if we are to win the fight, you and I must take the lead and work closely together.” That is why I’ve come today. Following our meeting, I will seek active collaboration from the other half of the local government [institutions]—the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in the ninety metropolitan, municipal, and district areas across the country where mining activities take place.”
He also urged chiefs to support the government’s efforts to combat the threat.

“There are many requests I intend to make of you during our closed-door session, but one of the most important, which I must state now, is to seek your assistance in removing partisan political interests from the fight against galamsey.”
“It can only succeed if it is a truly national battle that no one seeks to exploit for political gain, as we saw in the previous election.”
