A member of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources staff were detained for extorting more than GH$200,000 from illegal miners.
The Deputy Lands Minister, George Mireku Duker, gave the order to arrest the employee, Gabriel Sarpong.
He was allegedly using the Deputy Minister’s name to illegally collect money from miners for mining-related purposes.
Tuesday, September 13, 2022, saw the arrest of Gabriel Sarpong thanks to a tip from a companion.
All of the accusations of fraud made against Gabriel Sarpong were accepted.
The security apparatus has been tasked by the deputy minister to handle the situation carefully so that Mr Sarpong receives a harsh sentence under the law.
George Mireku Duker took advantage of the occasion to say that Mr Sarpong’s prosecution will serve as a deterrent to those in the same trade.

At the moment, Mr Gabriel Sarpong is being held at the Ministries Police Station in Accra.
