Mohammed Kudus continued his impressive run of form by scoring the decisive goal that sent Ajax into the next round of the KNVB Dutch Cup, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over FC Twente on Thursday night.
Playing at the De Grolsch Veste, the Ghanaian midfielder broke the deadlock in the 70th minute of a tightly contested Round of 16 clash, sealing Ajax’s progression into the quarter-finals. The goal marks Kudus’ 13th of the season — including four in the Champions League and seven in the Eredivisie.
From Transfer Turmoil to Key Player
Kudus’ season began in uncertainty. Under former manager Alfred Schreuder, he struggled for consistent minutes and was close to a move to Everton, only for Ajax to block the transfer. Despite the challenges, Kudus worked his way back into contention, scoring 10 goals before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he also netted twice for Ghana during the group stage.
Since Schreuder’s departure in January, interim manager John Heitinga has rejuvenated Ajax’s form — and Kudus has been at the heart of it. He has contributed two assists in his last two league games, including a stunning performance in the 5-0 win over Cambuur last Sunday.
Kudus and Heitinga have history, having previously worked together at Jong Ajax, where Kudus scored five goals in five appearances. Their understanding is now translating into top-tier performances at senior level, with Kudus earning Man of the Match honors in two of Heitinga’s first three games in charge.
The 22-year-old’s resurgence reflects not only his personal determination but also Heitinga’s ability to inspire confidence and unlock the potential of his squad.
