KNUST : Students would still be involved in Hall management

According to Dr Norris Bekoe, public relations officer of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the university will vigorously resist any set of activities that would prevent it from carrying out its primary mission.

He asserts that physical altercations on campus won’t compromise the university’s mission to advance knowledge and prepare young people to fill leadership roles in the nation.
He was talking about the recent fight on the KNUST campus involving students from Continental Hall and Unity Hall.

The students had hurled rocks and brandished weapons at each other, causing damage to property and harm to bystanders.
Following the altercation, a warrant for the arrest of the students who took part in it was issued.
Only the most recent in a string of violent fights between the two historic halls that have occasionally resulted in fatalities.

Dr Norris Bekoe stated on JoyNews’ PM Express that despite the University’s Management’s decision to dissolve the JCR management system in an effort to reduce violent disputes on campus, students will still be actively participating in the management of campus residence halls.

“KNUST exists to advance knowledge, to train our young people to take up the mantle from the old people.” And so, if anything threatens or distracts us from carrying out our mandate, we must do the right thing.”

“I’m just saying that we don’t want a situation where there are constant clashes on campus due to JCR elections or, say, hall management, or halls clashing and then attempting to kill each other.”

” If you look at the CCTV footage from the recent clash, you will see students wielding machetes, iron bars, iron rods, and other weapons meant to harm their fellow students you’d be amazed.”

“We are not saying that we are taking students off the management or administration of the University halls; rather, those who live in those halls are those who are supposed to assist the hall masters, hall tutors, and others in managing the affairs of the universities or the halls,” he explained.
