NAIROBI, Kenya, January 23

As schools reopen on Monday, parents are concerned about the high cost of their children’s stationery, uniforms, and other educational materials.

In addition to the current economic strain and high cost of living, they claim that the assessments, particularly in secondary schools, are exorbitant.

The majority of parents are complaining about the skyrocketing costs of educational materials, claiming that it is difficult for them to meet their children’s needs.

Due to financial constraints, some parents have been forced to send their children to day secondary schools instead of boarding schools.

They are concerned about the fact that, in some schools, it is required to purchase all learning materials, including uniforms and other boarding supplies like metal boxes, buckets, and beds. In Maua town, a metal box now costs Sh1,500, up from Sh1,200, and a three-inch mattress costs Sh1,800, up from Sh1,300.
