Chapter 8
It was starting to feel like a habit for people to knock on my door to ask for favors. First, it was Victoria, then Mrs. Bailey; my next-door neighbor. She’s old, then this delivery guy who brought me the wrong package asked me to sign it. And now…Jeremy.
“You got some nerve showing up at my door, Jeremy,” I stared at him with my arms crossed.
“Hey, Jane. Can we talk?”
“Sure, we can talk. What is it you want to talk about?”
“Don’t you think we should talk inside?”
“Fine,” I groaned.“But you’re not sitting on the sofa.”
I shut the door and followed him to the living room. I sat on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other. Jeremy too tried to sit next to me.
“Ah ah ah. Only I get to sit.”
“Oh, that’s not a problem. I’m cool with standing.”
“So…get on with it,” I signaled him to start talking.
Jeremy cleared his throat. “I came to apologize for everything. I’ve had time to reflect on my actions over the past few months, and I realized that I hurt you. What I did was unforgivable and I understand if you don’t want to forgive me.”
“Do you know something? We humans deliberately hurt the people who are closest to us and come back to ask those people we hurt to forgive us. Why? You and I planned to go on a date on the day of our first anniversary but you stood me up. Not only did you stand me up, but you were also cheated. You legit cheated on me with someone else on our anniversary night, Jeremy. That’s not something you take a few months to reflect on then suddenly pop up on my front door to ‘apologize’ and ask for forgiveness!”
“I was a dick. I had something so valuable and I threw it away for nothing. What I did was disgusting and horrible, and I didn’t realize it then. I’ve changed a lot since then, I even had to go for therapy.”
“Therapy?” I stared at Jeremy in unbelief.
“Yeah, I was in therapy. You weren’t the only one, Jane. I dated other people too but I messed up.”
“How many is that?”
“Three.”
Woah! That’s a lot.
As I stared at Jeremy, I noticed a lot had changed about him. The Jeremy I knew barely admitted that he was wrong but he realized he made a mistake and is taking responsibility for it. If there was something I learned from what happened between Kyle and Victoria, it is that everyone has messed up at some point in their life and it takes only an honest person to admit to their mistakes.
I don’t know why I did it, but I hugged Jeremy. Maybe it was because I too messed up my chance with Kyle and knew how he felt.
“You know, I too messed up my chance with someone,” I said to him.
“You did?”
“Yes, and I hope it isn’t too late to make things right.”
“It’s never too late to make things right.”
