Chapter 5

It’s been a week since Charlie’s christening; a week since I last saw Kyle. Turns out I was right, something did happen between the two. Something they hid from me.

After the incident, I left the church without Kyle. He’d called later that day but I ignored them. Sent a few texts too, but I still ignored them all. I suddenly didn’t want to have anything to do with Kyle. Like a plague, I didn’t want to have anything to do with him.

At some point, I got so pissed off by the frequency of calls that I answered.

“What do you want, Kyle,” I snapped.

“Woah, Jane. What’s going on? Ever since the church, you’ve stopped picking up my calls, you don’t reply to my texts either. It’s been two days now. Did I do something wrong?”

“That day at the christening, when you, me, and Victoria were together, I noticed the way you guys were staring at each other.”

“The way we were staring…what are you talking about?” he asked, confused.

“Did you have sex with Victoria?”

“Of course not! Why would you even think that?”

“I don’t know, Kyle. All I know is something did happen between the two of you which I happen not to know about. And if something did happen, I believe I have the right to know. So, spill it, Kyle!” I was breathing heavily.

“Okay, fine. There was this one time I visited but you were still at volleyball practice. Your room was locked and Victoria said that I could stay in her room and wait.”

“And then you guys had se–”

“We almost did but it didn’t happen. Look, she came after me, and I fell for it. It was a stupid thing to do and I’m sorry.”

“What stopped you guys?” I asked.

I needed to know the full detail. Every single piece of information was vital, it was the closure I needed to move forward.

“We heard you come into the house.”

“That’s all I needed to hear. Goodbye, Kyle,” I hung up.

That was the last time I spoke to Kyle. Deep down, I knew Kyle had a crush on Victoria. I mean, everyone did so it wasn’t much of a surprise to me. I just didn’t think I’d be this hurt to find out.

Ever since our last phone call, Kyle had been sending me flowers with notes inscribed with the word ‘I’m sorry’ in them. My colleagues were starting to get nosey, some even thought I had a secret admirer.

“That should be the third flower you’re getting this week, Jane. When are you going to kick aside your pride and give this guy a chance? You know the good ones don’t last long,” Jessica, one of my colleagues pointed out. She’s the nosiest of them all.

I fake-smiled at Jessica and turned back to the delivery guy, taking the flower from him.

“Thank you. The next time he asks you to deliver these, you take them. Give it to the girl you like or something. Got it?”

The delivery guy nodded.

I immediately took the flowers and dumped them in the garbage can. Everyone stared at me in disbelief.

I know, I’m heartless. Don’t blame me.
