Chapter 3

It was almost 6 pm and I still hadn’t decided on a suitable dress. I barely had clothes for casual dates, nonetheless a major one. I was so nervous, my pits kept sweating. The worst part was I was running late.

“Not date material..too shabby..too revealing,” I mumbled as I tried on different gowns.

“I give up,” I groaned as I forcefully sat on my bed.

How was my day with Kyle supposed to be perfect if I didn’t have the perfect dress?

Well, maybe Kyle was right. I overthink things a lot. As I wallowed in sorrow, my eyes suddenly caught something. I quickly pulled out the material from underneath a pile of the other gowns I tried.

“Yes, this is Dress!” I yelled.

I held the gown in front of me as I admired myself in the mirror. I remembered getting the gown for my sister’s wedding. If I wasn’t going to be the bridesmaid, I might as well look stunning at the wedding. It had this slit that went all the way to my thigh, that’s how stunning I looked.

It took me five minutes to get ready. I put on my heels, strapped my purse onto my hand, and headed toward the door.

As I approached the elevator, my phone began to buzz. As anticipated, it was Kyle.

“I’m so sorry, Kyle. I had a bit of an emergency but I’m on my way now,” I explained.

“Does the emergency involve picking the right outfit?”

“Oh, my God! How could you have guessed? I spent two hours looking for the perfect dress. I just–” I paused when I heard Kyle laughing.

“Why are you laughing?” my face flushed.

“Cause that’s just like you, Jane. Do you remember the third grade when we were invited to McKenzie’s birthday party? We got there an hour late because you couldn’t find the perfect outfit.”

“My indecisiveness for outfit goes way back, don’t they?”

“I can’t wait to see what you’ve picked out though. I’m sure you’d look stunning.”

“You’ll just have to wait and see for yourself.”

“I’m waiting,” he hung up.

“Whoof,” I exhaled, still sweating.

I met Kyle standing in front of the cafe as I came down from the Uber. I couldn’t stop smiling as he walked closer, his eyes glistened in the dark.

“Hey. I’m sorry to keep you–” Kyle stopped me with a kiss on my cheek.

“You look beautiful,” he said, charmingly.

“Thank you. You don’t look bad either.”

“Now that you’re here, we can have the best night of our lives.”

I got back into the Uber with Kyle. I kept sneaking peeks at him as he entered, hoping our eyes wouldn’t meet as I admired his frame.

“Where to,” the driver asked.

“I just set you the location,” Kyle answered.

“So, you meant it when you said it was a surprise, huh?”

“Shh,” Kyle put his index finger on his lips.

“C’mon now, Kyle. You know I hate surprises.”

“I know you do, but you’re gonna love this surprise,” he smirked.

Not to lie, I was into the whole secret date location. It was hot but would it kill him to at least give me a hint?

I stared out the window to know if I could recognize the route to where we were going but we seemed to drive past all the places I assumed we were going. It took me a while before I noticed we were heading out of town.

I shot Kyle a stare. He smirked. I guess he knew why I was staring at him.

The Uber stopped at some high-class, four or maybe a five-star restaurant. I knew all this because they had a red carpet and all.

“So, this is a surprise?”

“Uh-huh. Now, enough talk. Let’s get to eating,” he grabbed my hand and pulled me as we went inside.

The food was tasty and quite pricey too. Kyle ordered crab legs while I preferred mushroom soup. I wasn’t a heavy eater, especially when it was late.

“How are you enjoying your soup?” Kyle asked.

“Oh, it’s extremely delicious. I think this is the best mushroom soup I’ve ever tasted,” I looked down at my half-eaten bowl and smiled.

Kyle smiled back and continued his meal. The waiter asked us if we needed more wine and I agreed.

“Pour it on top,” I told the waiter. Kyle’s cup, on the other hand, didn’t move since his first glass.

“So, Kyle, you never told me what it is you do.”

“Well, I am an attorney at a law firm.”

“That sounds exciting. Come to think of it, you always did want to be a lawyer. Yelling ‘objection, your honor!’ in court. It’s great to see you fulfill your dream.”

“You’re so cute, Jane. I’m dying to kiss you right now. Um, can I kiss you, Jane?”

Can I kiss you, Jane? Those five words replayed in my head. My heart was beating fast. God knows how long I’ve wanted to kiss him. Seventeen years I’ve had a crush on Kyle..seventeen years I’ve longed to be in his arms but somehow things never seemed to work out. It was either he was with someone else or I was with someone else.

Who would have known that Kyle and I would be sitting opposite each other, pining for one another?

“Yes, I’d love that,” I stared into his eyes as he leaned towards me, resting his soft lips on mine. It was magic. Kyle drew me even closer to him as our kiss grew more intense. We knew it was time to take our romance to a more private place when my glass spilled on the table and stained his shirt.

“Your shirt!” I got a napkin and quickly dabbed his shirt but he held onto my hand.

“Should we go to my apartment?” he asked, suddenly seeming even hotter.

I shook my head in approval and he signaled the waiter to our table to settle the bill.

We stood outside the restaurant waiting for the Uber Kyle had ordered. We kissed twice and we’re still kissing. The more we kissed, the more I could feel Kyle getting harder. And there was nothing I loved more than feeling a guy’s hard-on. I wanted him, he wanted me. Where the hell was the Uber?!
