The Ghana Education Service, on behalf of the government, has announced plans to secure laptop computers for all teachers in the country.
Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, Director General of the GES, announced this in a letter to teacher unions, saying the development is in consultation with all teacher unions and that each teacher must have one and own it as a “personal asset.”
According to the letter, the government will pay 70% of the cost of the laptop, with the remaining 30% paid by the teachers themselves via deductions from their salaries made directly by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
According to the GES, all materials required for effective teaching by teachers will be uploaded to it, making it extremely useful, particularly during the COVID-19 period.
“As a result, the government, through the Ministry of Education (MoE), is assisting the Ghana Education Service (GES), working closely with the GES’s Teacher Unions to secure laptops for all teaching staff.”
“The laptops are to be owned as personal assets by individual teachers, and they are required for each teacher because much of the teaching materials will be uploaded on them.” Thus, the curriculum, Teachers Resource Pack, Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and Professional Learning Communities (PLC) modules, as well as textbooks on core subjects, will be preloaded on the laptops to improve teacher performance.

“It is intended that, in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC), teachers’ portfolios for professional progression and licencing will be uploaded into the system, allowing teachers to access their build-up online.”
“The government has agreed to pay 70% of the cost, with individual teachers paying 30%.” These figures were reached in consultation with the teacher unions.”
It is unknown when procurement or distribution will begin.
According to the GES, each teacher must sign an acknowledgment form stating all personal information and authorising the deduction of the amount from their salaries.
