Ghana’s soldiers prefer protecting galamsey sites to peace-keeping missions

Akwasi Addai Odike, the founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has given up hope in the galamsey fight.

According to him, all stakeholders have shown little commitment to combating the threat.
“The fight against galamsey continues to fail because successive governments have contributed to the problem.” They extort money from these galamseyers [illegal miners] behind the scenes. I understand what goes into these things.

They pay their masters, who are politicians, to keep them away from them so they can carry out their nefarious activities,” he told Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s Face to Face.

He claimed that despite spending millions on the fight against galamsey, the President had lost.
According to him, a key issue is that “soldiers prefer to go to galamsey sites than peace-keeping missions, because they stand to benefit from illegal activities.”
