Gabby Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NP), has welcomed comments by International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgina to the effect that Ghana’s economic challenges are not the result of bad policies.
In a tweet, Mr. Otchere-Darko stated, “This is not Kojo Oppong Oppong Nkrumah or President Akufo-Addo speaking.”

The IMF chief attributed Ghana’s current poor economic conditions to the Covid pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.
According to her, shocks from the two unforeseeable factors have had a significant impact on the economy and are to blame for the country’s woes, rather than “bad policies” allegedly implemented by the government.
“You, like everyone else on the planet, have been harmed by exogenous shocks. The pandemic was followed by Russia-Ukraine. “And then we must recognize that it is not because of bad policies in the country, but because of this combination of shocks,” she added.
The IMF Director added that Ghana, as a strong country in the sub-region, should be helped by the IMF to recover because Ghana’s strength benefits neighboring countries.

“As a result, we must support (Ghana) because you are a member.” You are a powerful country with wonderful people, but we must also support Ghana because your strength contributes to the strength of your neighbors.
It makes the world a better place,” she told journalists at the ongoing Africa Climate Change Adaptation Summit.
Speaking further about the expected IMF deal with Ghana, she stated that the IMF is determined to reach an agreement with Ghana by the end of this year.
