Former Swansea City and West Ham United midfielder Andre Ayew have stated that his only goal with Ghana is to win a trophy.
Before retiring from the national team, the Black Stars captain wants to win either the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) or the World Cup.
If he plays in Tuesday’s friendly against Nicaragua, Ayew will tie Asamoah Gyan as Ghana’s most capped player. The Al Sadd forward made his Black Stars debut in 2007 and has appeared in 108 games, scoring 23 goals.
Ayew is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer in the Afcon, but he has yet to win a trophy with the senior national team, suffering heartbreaking defeats in two finals.
Ayew played in Ghana’s 2010 Afcon final loss to Egypt and wept five years later in the Afcon final loss to Ivory Coast on penalties.

“To be honest, I don’t have any personal goals. “The only personal goal I had — and continue to have — since joining the Black Stars was to win a trophy with the team,” Ayew told Graphic Sports.
“That’s my only goal, and I’ve come close a few times (the 2010 AFCON final and the 2015 AFCON final).” I won the Under-20 AFCON and Under-20 World Cup trophies, but my only goal is to win a trophy in the Black Stars jersey, any trophy — AFCON or World Cup. That is my goal, that is my aim, and that is what I pray for and strive for every day.”
Ayew will captain Ghana at this year’s World Cup in Qatar, where the Black Stars will compete in the group stage against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.
