Ghanaian woman fatally shot in a US Hospital

In the United States of America, a Ghanaian woman was murdered at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The incident occurred on October 22, 2022. A parolee murdered the victim and a colleague of hers.

Nestor Hernandez, 30, was identified as the suspect in the double homicide at Methodist Dallas Medical Center and is now facing capital murder charges.

At the time of the shooting, the suspect was on parole for aggravated robbery and was wearing an active ankle monitor.

The shooting inside the hospital was responded to by Methodist health system police, Dallas police, and Dallas fire rescue.

Jacqueline Ama Pokuaa, a Ghanaian woman, has been identified.

DALLAS, TX – On Saturday morning, two hospital employees were killed in a shooting at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The shooting occurred inside the hospital on the 1400 block of North Beckley Avenue around 11 a.m. on Saturday, according to Dallas police.

According to the hospital’s preliminary investigation, the suspect shot and killed the employees before being confronted by a Methodist Health System police officer.

The officer shot the suspect, Nestor Hernandez, 30, injuring him. He was then arrested, stabilized, and taken to another hospital for treatment.

According to the CEO of the Texas Combined Law Enforcement Associations, the suspect shot two maternity ward nurses. When an officer in the area noticed the suspect with a gun, he fired a single shot, striking Hernandez.

Hernandez was arrested by Methodist Health System Police for Capital Murder.

According to Dallas police, Hernandez was on parole for aggravated robbery and was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the shooting.

The shooting was described by Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia as “an abhorrent failure of our criminal justice system.”

Denise Jones claims she arrived at the hospital to see her parents on Saturday morning when she received a phone call from her father.

“‘There’s a shooter in the building,’ he said. ‘Get back in your car and drive as far away from the hospital as you can,’ he said “Jones stated.

Jones stated that her father barricaded himself in his wife’s hospital room and propped a chair against the door.

According to the hospital, there is no ongoing threat.

The shooting is being investigated by Methodist Health System Police in collaboration with Dallas Police.

In a statement, the hospital said:

The Methodist Health System Family is heartbroken at the loss of two of our beloved team members. Our entire organization is grieving this unimaginable tragedy. During this devastating time, we want to ensure our patients and employees that Methodist Dallas Medical Center is safe, and there is no ongoing threat. Our prayers are with our lost co-workers and their families, as well as our entire Methodist family. We appreciate the community’s support during this difficult time. 

“Our city loves our healthcare heroes, and our residents will be there for them as we grieve and seek swift justice,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a tweet.

“Our hearts are broken,” said Texas Nurses Association CEO Dr. Serena Bumpus, RN. “This is intolerable. No one should be afraid of going to work, especially a nurse or healthcare worker whose passion is to help others heal. We hope that our legislators recognize the importance of protecting healthcare workers.”
