Ghana Ranked 2nd Safest Country in Africa

Ghana has been ranked the second safest country in Africa by global tourism agency Altezza Travel, outperforming several high-profile nations including Canada, Greece, and Australia in terms of low crime rates and public safety.

The recognition comes as part of Altezza Travel’s newly released 2025 Global Tourism Safety Report, which assesses safety standards and crime statistics across key global destinations. Ghana was praised for its remarkably low crime rate, stable democracy, and increasing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to maintain law and order through enhanced community patrols and public engagement.

Ghana’s Global Safety Standing

According to the report, Ghana:

  • Outranks countries such as France, China, Jamaica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Moldova on the Global Peace Index.

  • Has a zero score on the Global Terrorism Index, placing it among the world’s safest countries regarding terrorist threats.

  • Beats Canada, Greece, and Australia in terms of reported crime levels, according to the Numbeo Crime Index 2025.

Altezza Travel evaluated global safety using a composite analysis of several key indicators: the Global Peace Index, Global Terrorism Index, Global Safety Report, Human Development Index, KOF Globalization Index, and the Numbeo Crime Index. The countries were then scored based on their overall safety profiles, with Ghana, Rwanda, and Tunisia emerging as the top three safest nations in Africa.

“Ghana’s low crime rate, democratic governance, independent judiciary, and freedom of the press make it one of the most stable and secure destinations on the African continent,” the report highlighted.

An Oasis of Stability in West Africa

Despite its proximity to countries with ongoing instability, such as Burkina Faso, Ghana has maintained its reputation as a haven of peace. With a population of over 34.5 million, Ghana boasts a vibrant political landscape, strong civil institutions, and one of the most respected police forces in the region.

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the report, citing the country’s improved international image and the role it plays in boosting travel confidence among global tourists. “Safety is a top priority for tourists, and this recognition solidifies Ghana’s standing as a preferred destination for both leisure and business travel,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism.

Challenges in Measuring Crime

While the report acknowledges the complexity of crime data across borders, it emphasizes Ghana’s consistent performance across various global safety indexes. “Crime can be difficult to measure,” it notes, “but Ghana’s low incidence of violent crime, political stability, and proactive law enforcement strategies are undeniable.”
