Filipino on bail in connection with a $6 million fraud

An Assistant System Analyst was granted GH6 million bail by an Accra Circuit Court for alleged GH6,289,908.00 fraud.

The Court presided over by Ms. Adelaide Abui Keddy ordered Mark Anthony Alayon Sapungay, a Filipino, to acquire three people to act as sureties for him, with the reasoning that they will sign a bond to pay the sum involved if the accused person absconds.

Sapungay, who disputed the accusation of fraudulent breach of trust and theft, agreed to surrender his passport within ten days of the execution of his bond.

He will be back in Court on December 14, 2022.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Oppong, Hajj Awal Ismail is a businessman and Director of Aim Global Limited, Industrial Area, North Kaneshie, as well as the complainant.

He claimed that the accused was a Filipino and a representative of a sibling firm, Aim Global Philippines, based in the Philippines, who worked as an Assistant System Analyst with the complainant in Ghana.

According to the prosecution, Sapungay dishonestly appropriated GH6,289,908.00 belonging to the complainant’s company in 2020 and unlawfully transferred the same amount to the complainant’s sister company in the Philippines without the complainant’s knowledge, causing the complainant to be unable to submit his tax returns for the year 2020/2021 to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

It stated that once the complainant discovered the illegal act, the firm performed an examination of the company’s financial activity and discovered that the money had been taken from the company’s coffers.
