ECG Launches Aggressive Disconnection Campaign Over GH₵5 Billion Debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will begin an intensive nationwide disconnection exercise on Monday, March 20, targeting Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that collectively owe the company over GH₵5 billion in unpaid electricity bills.

The revenue mobilization drive, which will run until Thursday, April 20, is part of ECG’s efforts to recover debts accumulated between September 2022 and February 2023.

According to ECG’s Managing Director, Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama Esq., the bulk of the debt is held by government institutions, with some agencies failing to settle their obligations for months. He emphasized that the company can no longer afford to operate under such financial pressure and warned that defaulters, regardless of their status, will face disconnection.

“This exercise is not selective. Any customer — whether an MDA, SOE, or private entity — that refuses to pay will be disconnected,” Mr. Mahama stressed. “ECG is a business, not a charity. We must all begin to treat it as such.”

Notably, the Ministry of Energy recently had its power cut until it settled its outstanding bills in full — a move that signals ECG’s resolve to treat all debtors equally.

As part of preparations for the exercise, Mr. Mahama has visited all ECG operational regions to brief staff on the revenue mobilization strategy and to reinforce the importance of professionalism and customer respect throughout the process.

The campaign will involve top management, regional heads, and field officers, making it one of the company’s largest coordinated recovery operations to date.

ECG aims to recover 100% of the outstanding GH₵5 billion by the end of the exercise, which it says is crucial to ensuring the continued stability and sustainability of the country’s electricity supply.
