Former President Donald Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on Thursday, making him the first president in US history to face criminal charges. According to sources familiar with the case, Trump faces more than 30 counts of business fraud.
Following the indictment, Trump issued a fiery statement calling the move “political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence told CNN that charging the former president would be a “disservice to the country” and would further divide people. Key House Republican leaders have also come out in support of Trump.
The former president is being investigated by the Manhattan district attorney’s office for his alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates back to the 2016 presidential election. Trump is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on Tuesday.
