Death Penalty Sought for PhD Student Accused of Killing Infant and Injuring Twin

Pittsburgh, PA – Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Nicole Virzi, a 30-year-old PhD student charged with homicide and aggravated assault in the death of a 6-week-old baby and injuries to his twin brother.
According to court filings, Virzi was babysitting the twins in June when she called police, claiming one of the infants had fallen from a bassinet.

The baby, Leon Katz, died from blunt force trauma to the head, while his twin brother suffered scratches, bruising, and swelling.

Virzi’s defense attorney maintains her innocence, disagreeing with the DA’s pursuit of the death penalty.

The case has sparked debate, as Pennsylvania remains one of 27 states with the death penalty, despite no executions since 1999.
