COVID-19: Reintroduce restrictions on transport industry

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is urging the government to reintroduce transportation restrictions in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Commercial vehicles, including trotros and taxis, are still crowded, according to the party, with very lax adherence to COVID-19 preventive protocols.

At a press conference on Saturday, CPP National Chairperson Nana Akosua Frimpomaa stated that the government must take immediate action to address the country’s rapidly increasing positive cases.

“We are appealing to the government of Ghana, particularly the president of this country, to immediately and as a matter of priority extend the restrictions to what they did previously.”

“During the first shutdown, the CPP went around the country to see what was going on and how the cost [of social distancing on public transportation] was being absorbed.” We understand that because they [drivers and car owners] are wearing the mask, they cannot say they will limit the number of passengers to three or two per seat. Mr. President, you must return and request that they do so [because] the trotros and taxis are still overcrowded and protocols are not being followed,” she observed.

Months after Ghana was first diagnosed with COVID-19 in March 2020, the President directed public transportation vehicles such as trotros and taxis to reduce the number of passengers they transport.

Vehicles with four passengers per seat were asked to reduce it to three, while those with three passengers per seat were asked to reduce it to two.
All of these were part of the major restrictions imposed on the transportation sector at the time.

“In consultation with the Ministries of Transport and Aviation and the leadership of transport operators, the government has taken the decision to lift the restrictions in the transport sector, and allow for full capacity in our domestic airplanes, taxis, trotros and buses,” President Akufo-Addo said in that national address.

With the recent surge in positive cases in the country, many are calling for restrictions to be reinstated in order to prevent an explosion in cases.
