Chapter 5

It was a slow day at Big Sam’s supermarket, only five customers had walked into the store and three out of the five are only window-shopped.

The bells on the doors chimed and someone unexpected walked into the supermarket, catching Catherine’s  attention.

“Kiel?” she stared, surprised.

He wore a black T-shirt with a leather jacket over it, denim jeans, and black boots. Kylie took off his shades. Smiling, he said, “Hi, Catherine.”

Catherine took a quick peek at her boss’s office to make sure he wasn’t looking. “Outside, now,” she mouthed.

Kiel did as he was told with Catherine following in his steps.

“Why are you here, Kyle? I moved like you told me to, so what now?”

“I only came to see how Stacey’s holding up,” Kiel explained.

“Kiel, You know how dangerous these guys are. What if they tracked you down here?”

“No one knows I’m here, I can assure you that. How’s Stacey pulling through?”

“She still hates me for taking her away.”

“She’ll come around. Well, I better head back to the motel before your boss fires you,” Kylie signaled Catherine to her boss who was leaving his office.

“Stacey’s changing, Kiel,” Catherine said, not minding that her boss was now staring at them.

“What do you mean by changing?”

“The school called yesterday and said Stacey hurt someone. I thought it’d take longer before they came, Kiel,” Catherine sobbed.

“But this wasn’t meant to happen until she was eighteen.”

“I thought so myself. She only turned seventeen four months ago. She’s not ready for this,” Kylie was worried.

This was the last thing he expected to happen. If Stacey does have her powers as her mom said, then they were no longer safe, and running would be futile.

“You make sure Stacey’s safe and leave the rest to me. I’ll think of something,” Kylie assured her.

Catherine hugged him, “Thank you.”

When Kiel returned to the motel, he noticed the door was unlocked. Kiel sensed the presence of someone right behind him. As he turned around, he felt a sharp blow to the head and blanked out.

Since Kiel left the store, Catherine hadn’t been herself. She had a feeling something was wrong. She thought to let Kiel know about it. That is, if she can find him.

“Goodbye and come again,” she gave a warm smile to the old lady.

The old lady left the store, allowing two men in leather jackets into the store. Seeing the tattoos on their necks as they walked in, Catherine hid. She hid at the frozen foods section and spied on them. She felt an unexpected tap on her shoulder and went panicked.

“Myles! It’s just you,” Catherine held her chest.

“Yeah, it’s me,”  Myles said.

“I need you to go attend to those men over there, I feel a little nauseous.”

Myles was skeptical,

“Sure… Whatever.”

Catherine watched closely as Myles approached the two men.

“Hey, fellas, what can I do for you?” Myles asked.

“We’re looking for someone by the Catherine, she works here,” one of them said.

“Catherine? Sorry, dude, haven’t heard that name around here.”

“Nigel I got something,” the second guy said, sniffing around.

Nigel signaled his partner to the freezer. His sniffed his way to Catherine but didn’t see her.

“Hey. What’s taking so long?” Nigel asked. His impatience was growing.

“I thought I had her scent, boss, but I lost it.”

“That dirty witch! She must have known we were come. Let’s go pay the kid a visit,” he tossed Myles to the ground and left the store. Myles lay there, watching Nigel till he got into a Mercedes and zoomed off.

“That was close,” he said to himself.

“Are they gone?” Catherine, from nowhere asked.

“Jeez! Where did you come from?”

“Doesn’t matter, I need to get out through the back. Tell Daniel I’m not feeling too well and make it sound believable.”
