Chapter 2
After hours of unpacking boxes and cleaning, Catherine and Stacey sat down for dinner– microwaved mac and cheese. They ate at a two-person round table without saying a word to each other. This was something they were both used to.
“Don’t forget we’ll be going to your new school tomorrow to get you registered,” Catherine said while chewing.
“Mhmm,” Stacey replied, not putting in much enthusiasm nor making eye contact.
She finished her meal and sprang up from her chair along with her plate. Catherine’s eyes followed Stacey’s movement till she went into her room.

The following day, Catherine and Stacey sat in the principal’s office. They each sat on a chair opposite the principal.
“Stacey Jonathan, am I right? It’s a pleasure having you at our school,” he said with a smile. Sadly, his grand gesture wasn’t reciprocated. Stacey only stared at him.
“I’m so sorry, she’s not much of a talker,” Catherine apologized.
“Oh, let me guess, new house, new school, new environment. I get it. Let’s bite the chase then, shall we?”
He pulled open the desk drawer and ruffled around a bunch of papers. He took out a piece and handed it to Stacey.
“Here, this is your schedule for this year’s school semester. There’s a biology class going on at the moment. You can join them and kick-start your day. Textbooks are collected from the library. I suggest you go during lunch.”
Stacey took the paper from the principal. “Thank you,” she said, almost mumbling.
They left the office and into the hallway where they both departed.
Stacey got to the science lab with the teacher’s permission.
“Everyone, this is Stacey Jonathan. She’s new so be nice,” Ms. Francesca announced.
Their stares made Stacey uneasy and she dashed to the back of the class without a word. Most of the students muttered.
During lunch, Stacey practiced opening her locker with the combination key she was given. She also wanted to visit the school library to get her textbooks.
As she tried to set her combination, a baseball hit her on the back of her head.
“Ouch!” She grunted, noticing the baseball next to her feet.
“Oops!” Kevin said, mockingly. He was a school bully. Stacey turned to see Kevin, a blonde-headed boy standing right behind her.
“What did you do that for?” Stacey asked, boldly.
“Oops,” Kevin repeated in a less friendly tone, giving Stacey a nasty stare.
Kevin walked away with two other classmates behind him. Everyone in the school hallway stared at Stacey. She quickly shut her locker and hurried to the library.
Kevin on the other hand, saw Stacey coming in his way and stuck out his foot and Stacey tripped over and fell.
Half the hallway roared in laughter. Stacey’s face flushed red. She squirmed around the floor, looking for her pen and a few books she initially held onto. She looked around her and saw Kevin with his foot still in place. She felt humiliated. She was about to leave when someone held out her pen to her. She traced the hand to a brown-eyed boy wearing a football jacket.
“Are you okay?” He asked, waiting for Stacey to take the pen.
“I’m fine,” Stacey said, snatching the pen rudely away from him. She got up and fled the scene. The high school Jock stared in amazement.
